Travel Insurance

Every savvy travel knows that taking the first step on a trip be it a long weekend, an overnight break, a long holiday or even a 3 month cruise is foolish without travel insurance. But why is this? Well travel insurance is there protect you when you are on holiday, there are many unforeseen problems that can arise thorough no fault of the travellers and if they do occur you have the back up of travel insurance to help sort out the problems.

There are a variety of travel insurances available to travellers, all at different prices and offering different cover. Which one is best for you depends upon your circumstances, if you have any existing medical conditions, where you are travelling and how often but there are certain points that every travel insurance policy should cover.

One of the main reasons to have travel insurance is incase you need emergency medical assistance, if you didn’t have travel insurance you would have to pay for this yourself which can add up to quite a bit. With travel insurance all your bills are covered leaving you with getting better to worry about. This is the same if you need a helicopter to get you to a hospital or transferring to another hospital for treatment.

Travel insurance also covers you incase you cannot go on holiday, if you have to cut your trip short or even if your holiday is cancelled. There are many reasons why any of these may happen, you or a close relative could fall ill before the holiday, or a close relative may die. There is an incident in the place you are visiting such as a natural disaster or a terrorist attack and you want to cancel. The tour operator you booked your holiday through could go out of business or your flight maybe cancelled.

Travel insurance should also cover you if your bags are lost or stolen, if any medication has been lost or stolen and you need to fill in an emergency prescription. Your travel insurance should also cover any cash and travellers cheques that are lost or stolen.

Self catering, b&b, all inclusive, half board, full board – A quick guide

Booking a holiday is great fun – choosing where you want to go and how long for is the easy bit though. With so many deals out there to be had, how on earth do you make the right decision when it comes to choosing what kind of board you want?

Make sure you get the most for your buck with my quick fire guide to types of holiday to choose from!

Self catering

Self catering holidays mean that your accomodation is included, but nothing else. There are no meals included in your holiday. This can be a good thing though -you can get out and explore the local area instead of sticking to your hotel but it can add up if you eat out everyday.

B&B

B&B or bed and breakfast as it’s commonly known, means that your holiday includes your accomodation and also breakfast each morning. A great way to start the day and make sure you fill up to save your pennies when it comes to lunch.

Half board

Half board holidays always include breakfast and will also include lunch or dinner, depending on your chosen deal -make sure you check this closely beforehand. These kind of holidays can be great if you just want to eat out for one meal a day.

Full Board

Full board holidays include your main meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner but most will not include any additional snacks or your drinks, so be prepared to pay extra for these.

All-inclusive

The grandaddy of all holidays, all-inclusive holidays include pretty much everything you’ll need – accomodation, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Check the fineprint on drinks though as sometime alcohol will not be included or there may be restrictions on what you can and can’t drink under your holiday agreement.

Disney Theme Parks – Top 3

Disney is one of the biggest brands in the world and is loved by children and adults alike! Heading to a theme park is a great idea for an all inclusive holiday and as far as family holidays go, they’ll be remembered for years to come.

Disney certainly has a few to choose from, although you may not realise it -most people just think of the World DisneyResort in Florida, but there are a few more than that! Here are 3 of the most loved.

The Walt Disney World Resort actually consists of the Disneyland Resort, which is mainly made up of hotels and entertainment venues and also the Walt Disney World Resort which is a massive entertainment complex, comprising of the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney Hollywood Studios and the Animal Kingdom. There are also two water parks – Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon.

Next up is Tokyo Disney Resort, which – you guessed it – is based in Tokyo, Japan. Back in 2001, the resort expanded to include Tokyo DisneySea. The resort is modelled in the image of the California resort and is made up of seven themed lands and has plenty of seasonal parades. The Japanese enthusiasm for all things Disney really helps to make this less well known resort a massive success and it’s well worth a visit if you’re in the Far East.

Disneyland Paris is Europe’s only Disney resort and as such is popular with a lot of people! Based just outside of Paris, the theme park and studios are split into 4 different areas -Frontierland, Discoveryland, Fantasyland and Adventureland and there are no less thatn seven hotels to choose from. A perfect weekend trip from the UK or Western Europe and it’s really easy to get to!

Thailand’s Top Dishes

If you’re looking for exotic shores, they don’t come much better than Thailand. As well as the beautiful beaches, supremely friendly natives and amazing islands, the one thing that Thailand is famous for is its food.

If you are lucky enough to be heading to Thailand, keep an eye out for some of their most popular (and tasty!) dishes and make sure you try them out…

Tom Yam Kung

Thailand has some great soups and broths and this is one of the most popular. Fiery, spicy shrimp are the heart of this dish but the flavours are delicate and balanced. A must try!

Green Chicken Curry

You can’t visit Thailand and not try a green curry and taste it the way it should be cooked. Beautiful, simple and tasty, not to mention filling, this is something you’ll find all over Thailand.

Phad Thai

Fried noodles with assorted vegetables, egg, meat or seafood – this is a Khao San Road favourite and you can pick it up everywhere; from street stalls to fancy restaurants so you have no excuse for not trying it. You can choose what you want in it and it’s so tasty, I guarantee you will try it more than once.

Tom Kha Kai

Coconut and chicken are Thai staples and this is another massively popular soup that you’d be foolish to miss. The calming coconut doesn’t mean it’s boring though and this is one of the most flavoursome dishes that the Thai people have perfected over generations.

Yam Nua

You might not think of salads when you think of Thailand, but you should. This refreshing, tasty salad will make you feel very smug for choosing the healthy option. A delicate blend of spicy beef, chilli, coriander, ginger, garlic, onion and the sweet saltiness of soy and fish sauce really make this one a winner!

These are just a few of the amazingly tasty options available – if you really want to know what to try though, make sure you ask a local or your waiter at a local restaurant for recommendations.

Inclusive Holidays: What to consider before booking

An all inclusive holiday can offer real value for money in the right circumstances. Three meals a day included in the price can save a great deal of spending money – especially if hungry kids are involved or the resort has limited eateries. Sometimes an inclusive holiday is the best and only option but there are things that need to be considered before committing to one.
In the more obscure holiday destinations, like some places in Africa, and the Caribbean, chances to leave the hotel complex can be rare. Planned excursions are obviously available, but these are organised bus tours to specific destinations. In some popular North African resorts it is recommended that you don’t go on walkabouts outside of the hotel complex. In these cases, all inclusive holidays are sometimes the only option.

If you have children, then an inclusive holiday can offer extremely good value. The price of drinks and snacks can be expensive. An all inclusive holiday is obviously more expensive but if you consider the savings on how much money you will need to take, you could be surprised at how good value you are getting. Remember that most of the money any traveller spends is spent on drinks and meals.

Some resorts really don’t suit all inclusive holidays. If you are somewhere where you will spend most of your day wandering around the resort then you probably won’t get the best value from your all inclusive entitlement. Some resorts are blessed with an assortment of cheap eateries and tourist attractions. You will leave your hotel in the morning and return at night. To some extent, an all inclusive holiday ties you to the hotel. It seems a waste to go out and buy a nice meal when there is a complementary meal available from the hotel. Some people see this as restrictive.
So bear in mind that an all inclusive is good value but only in the right circumstances and in the right resort.
