Every savvy travel knows that taking the first step on a trip be it a long weekend, an overnight break, a long holiday or even a 3 month cruise is foolish without travel insurance. But why is this? Well travel insurance is there protect you when you are on holiday, there are many unforeseen problems that can arise thorough no fault of the travellers and if they do occur you have the back up of travel insurance to help sort out the problems.

There are a variety of travel insurances available to travellers, all at different prices and offering different cover. Which one is best for you depends upon your circumstances, if you have any existing medical conditions, where you are travelling and how often but there are certain points that every travel insurance policy should cover.

One of the main reasons to have travel insurance is incase you need emergency medical assistance, if you didn’t have travel insurance you would have to pay for this yourself which can add up to quite a bit. With travel insurance all your bills are covered leaving you with getting better to worry about. This is the same if you need a helicopter to get you to a hospital or transferring to another hospital for treatment.

Travel insurance also covers you incase you cannot go on holiday, if you have to cut your trip short or even if your holiday is cancelled. There are many reasons why any of these may happen, you or a close relative could fall ill before the holiday, or a close relative may die. There is an incident in the place you are visiting such as a natural disaster or a terrorist attack and you want to cancel. The tour operator you booked your holiday through could go out of business or your flight maybe cancelled.

Travel insurance should also cover you if your bags are lost or stolen, if any medication has been lost or stolen and you need to fill in an emergency prescription. Your travel insurance should also cover any cash and travellers cheques that are lost or stolen.
